In January 2017, Aramis Peterson, 27, was shot and killed by senseless gun violence in Atlanta, GA. His mother, Phyllis Peterson, has since become a vocal Social Justice and Gun Violence Advocate. Phyllis not only advocates for her son Aramis, but she is also an advocate for all mothers who feel voiceless in the wake of losing their children to gun violence.
Since Aramis’ death, Phyllis Peterson founded The Aramis Peterson Foundation in her son’s name to honor his memory and has been dedicated to helping other mothers who are experiencing grief from their traumatic losses.
Under Phyllis’ passionate leadership and guidance, The Aramis Peterson Foundation continues to help numerous families by providing counseling resources, advising on navigating the legal system and seeking justice, and most often, just being compassionate by lending a listening ear.
In the wake of tragedy, Phyllis Peterson turned to organizing and activism. The Aramis Peterson Foundation was founded to promote gun control and amend the laws that govern the release of violent offenders. Phyllis never thought that gun control would touch her life, but her eyes are wide open now.
The violent offender who ended the life of Aramis Peterson had previously been arrested and jailed on charges of aggravated assault and should never have been released. Instead, he should have been held while awaiting his trial which may have saved his life and definitely would have saved Aramis’ life.
The Fulton County Courthouse decided to give the violent offender a Bond; while he was already released on a previous Bond. Within 24 hours of that release, he robbed and murdered Phyllis’ son Aramis in cold blood in front of his sons. Since then, the violent offender has been found guilty of malice murders, multiple aggravated assault charges, and other gang related charges. He was subsequently sentenced to Life plus five years without the possibility of parole.
Two black lives have now been lost…the people that we elected and placed in politics should hold some accountability. Our country is at a crossroads, and the lives of our citizens hang in the balance.
We need independent news organizations that fight for truth and hold our government officials accountable. Truth is not an option; it is essential. Phyllis Peterson believes that every one of us deserves equal access to fact-based news. This is why leading an organization that fights for truth and accountability is so important to her.
The Aramis Peterson Foundation will continue to advocate for social justice and will challenge elected officials who refuse to do their job or who fail our families and communities.
Phyllis Peterson truly believes that every one of us deserves an equal opportunity at life.
